How to Style a Table Runner: Sizes and Layering

A table runner is the fastest way to make a dining table look finished, and the easiest thing to get wrong. Almost every mistake comes down to length: too short and it looks like a mat, too long and it drags.

The short version

  • Add 24 inches to your table length for a 12 inch overhang each end.
  • Or stop the runner 6 inches short of each end. Both are correct, in between is not.
  • Runner width should be about a third of the table width.
  • Layer placemats on top of the runner, never underneath.
  • Keep centrepieces below eye level so people can talk across them.

What length runner do I need?

There are only two lengths that look deliberate. Either the runner overhangs each end by 6 to 12 inches, or it stops well short of each end and sits fully on the tabletop. Anything that ends flush with the table edge, or overhangs by an inch or two, reads as a mistake.

5 ft (60 in) 84 in 48 in
6 ft (72 in) 96 in 60 in

8 ft (96 in) 120 in 84 in

Check the chair railIf your table has a deep apron or your chairs tuck in tight, choose the shorter option. An overhanging runner that touches a chair back gets pulled off the table every time someone sits down.

Width, and why it matters more than people think

Aim for a runner roughly a third of your table width. On a standard 36 to 40 inch table that means 12 to 14 inches. Too narrow and it looks like a stripe; too wide and you lose the wood entirely, which defeats the point of laying a runner rather than a cloth.

The wood showing on either side is doing real work. It frames the runner and gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Layering with placemats

Placemats go on top of the runner, never underneath. Underneath creates a lump under the plate and the whole setting tilts.

The classic combination is a jute runner down the centre with rattan chargers or woven placemats at each seat. The two textures are close enough to feel related and different enough to read as layers. If your runner is chunky, keep the placemats flat, and the other way round.

On a narrow table, skip placemats entirely and let the runner do the work. Crowding both onto a 32 inch table leaves nowhere for glasses.

What to put on top

  • Keep it low. Anything above about 12 inches blocks conversation. Save the tall stems for a side table.
  • Group in threes. Two candle holders and a bowl, or three vessels at different heights, spaced across the middle third.
  • Leave the ends clear. The last 12 inches at each end belong to serving dishes, not decoration.
  • Repeat one material. Wood, ceramic and natural fibre together is enough. A fourth material starts to look busy.

Everyday versus hosting

For everyday, a runner and one low bowl is the whole look, and it survives homework and laptops. For hosting, add chargers, candle holders and a small vessel at each end, then take the centrepiece off once the food arrives so the table has room to work.

A natural fibre runner is genuinely practical here. It hides crumbs between meals, shakes out over a bin in seconds, and does not need pressing the way linen does.

Common questions

How long should a table runner be?

Either 24 inches longer than your table so it overhangs by 12 inches at each end, or short enough to stop about 6 inches before each end and sit fully on the tabletop. A runner that ends level with the table edge, or overhangs by only an inch or two, looks unintentional.

Do placemats go on top of or under a table runner?

On top. Placing mats under the runner creates a raised ridge beneath each plate and makes the setting unstable. Lay the runner down the centre first, then set the placemats over it at each seat.

Can you use a table runner on a round table?

Yes. Either lay a short runner across the centre so it stops before the edge, or cross two runners at right angles for a more formal look. Avoid a long overhanging runner on a round table, because the overhang lands where people sit.

How do you clean a jute table runner?

Shake it out or vacuum it on low suction. For spills, blot straight down with a dry cloth rather than rubbing, then let it dry fully before folding. Do not machine wash or soak a jute runner, as the fibres stiffen and the weave can distort.
